Abstract

Heading D1L An advancing pile fabric is dyed by applying dye liquor to the pile surface, followed by contacting the back surface with one or more triturating elements. As described, the dye applicator 2 comprises a trough 10 in which a roller 11, partially immersed, rotates. An inclined plate 12 scrapes the non-immersed part and dye liquor removed from the roller flows onto the pile 1 of the fabric. The fabric subsequently passes through a spiral steamer 4 over groups of rollers which contact the back of the fabric and have a peripheral speed different to that of the fabric, e.g. by rotating faster than or counter to the fabric movement. There may also be provided stationary 19 or moving 18 rods or bars arranged to triturate the back of the fabric. The groups of rollers may have increasing diameters in the direction of fabric travel and have a common drive (Fig. 1). The applicator may be inside or outside the steam chamber.
