Abstract

1,256,964. Plate heat-exchangers. HISAKA WORKS Ltd. 13 Feb., 1969 [28 June, 1968 (2); 28 Aug., 1968 (2)], No. 8004/69. Heading F4S. A plate condenser comprises a plurality of parallel plates 1a, 1b, spaced apart by suitable peripheral sealing arrangements to define passages for fluid to be condensed alternating with passages for cooling water. The passages through which the fluid to be condensed passes include a plurality of inclined baffles 4a which act to guide condensed liquid drops downwardly, these baffles 4a being incorporated on the surface of the plates 1a. Vertical baffles 8 provided on the surface of plates 1b define a return flow path for the cooling water entering through inlet 6 and leaving through outlet 6b. The baffle 8 may extend the full length of the plate surface to define two separate water passages (Fig. 4B, not shown). The inlets 2, 2b, for the fluid to be condensed, which are shown to extend horizontally across the plates, may alternatively extend vertically (Figs. 8A, 8B) down one side of the plates. In a modification the plate 1a may be formed with inclined recesses in its surface acting to guide the condensed liquid downwardly either towards the sides of the plate (Fig. 6A) or towards the centre (Fig. 6C). In an alternative form the condensed liquid is guided by a series of ribs formed on both sides of an apertured intermediate plate (91, Fig. 9) disposed in the passages through which the fluid to be condensed passes. The peripheral sealing arrangement between adjacent plates, Fig. 10A, comprises a metal spacer 102 having a recess 107 therein for receiving a circular gasket. Alternatively, two recesses on opposite sides may each receive an oval gasket (Fig. 11). In another form (Fig. 10c) a gasket (106b) is interposed between adjacent spacers (102b) which have no recesses. The periphery of the plates may be suitably flanged to receive various other gasket arrangements (see Figs. 12A, 12B, 13A-13C).
