Abstract

1,256,368. Fasteners. HI SHEAR CORP. 17 Dec., 1968 [18 March, 1968], No. 59849/68. Heading F2H. A fastener 11 for making an interference fit with the cylindrical wall of a hole 14 in a metal workpiece 10 comprises a cylindrical shank 16, a head 17, fastening means 20, a deflector section 25 and an expander section 30. As shown, the fastener means comprises a screwthread, the major diameter 21 of which is less than the diameter 15 of the hole 14. The expander section consists of a conical portion 32 and a curved portion 31, the surface of which is continuous with the surface of the deflector section 25. On inserting the fastener in the hole, the expander section stresses the material surrounding the hole beyond the yield point, the material returning to embrace the shank in the form of a force fit when the fastener is driven completely home. The shank and the expander section may be plated with cadmium, silver, aluminium or various of the noble metals. A nut is screwed on the fastener means, but in modifications the threads of the fastener means are replaced by a head deformable by a hammer in the manner of a rivet or by a head having a groove to receive a snap ring.
