Abstract

1,255,923. Extractor mechanism for weapons. DEFENCE, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR. 9 Nov., 1966 [11 Nov., 1965], No. 48007/65. Heading F3C. An extractor mechanism for a weapon of the type having an automatic sliding breech mechanism, in which mechanism a breech block slides transversely of the breech face and is operated to open the breech upon recoil of the weapon relative to a cradle or mounting, includes an extractor which is moved into engagement with the spent cartridge case during recoil of the weapon after firing and recoils with the weapon, the extractor being retained with the spent case in a rearward position during run-out of the weapon, thereby effecting extraction of the case from the breech. Retention of the extractor may be achieved by means of a spring catch. In a preferred form, the extractor also performs the function of a rammer and is arranged to recoil with the weapon against the action of a return rammer spring to its rearward position where it is retained while the weapon runs out to effect extraction and while a new round of ammunition is inserted into the extractor. Release of the extractor then permits it to be driven forward by the rammer return spring to ram the new round into the chamber of the weapon. The extractor is conveniently released by the action of inserting the new round, e.g. by arranging for the round or some part of the loading mechanism to engage and release the spring catch. The ramming of the new round into the chamber releases the breech block retaining latch which is provided to hold the breech block open during reloading, whereby the breech block closes automatically after ramming the new round. The extractor is pulled into engagement with the spent cartridge case by engagement with the breech block as it opens. Primary extraction, or loosening, of the case is effected by means of wedge action between can faces, or ramps, on the breech block and extractor which interact toward the end of the opening movement of the breech block to move the extractor away from the breech face.
