Abstract

1,255,884. Winches. ATLAS-MAK MASCHINENBAU G.m.b.H. 13 March, 1970 [15 March, 1969], No. 12084/70. Heading B8B. A load compensator for maintaining equal loads in the cables 21 of two winches carrying a load 22 centrally supported therebetween on a crossbar 1, comprises on the crossbar, attachment points 3, 4 for the cables and a point 5 for the load, forming an isosceles triangle whereby any tilting of the crossbar from the horizontal, causes, due to a reduced moment arm b<SP>1</SP>, a greater torque to be applied to the winch having the decreased payout. The drives for the two winches are connected together such that one winch pays out whilst the other winds in until any unequal torque between the winches is compensated for and the crossbar returns to its horizontal position. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) the isosceles triangle is formed by a pair of chains attached at one end to each winch cable and having their remote ends attached one to each end of the crossbar. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) each winch drum is driven from a motor through a differential gear, the two gears being interconnected to facilitate the compensation motion between the two drums. The interconnected pinions of the two differential gears may be braked so that each winch operates independently. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), each winch is driven by an hydraulic motor, the circuits of which are interconnected through shut-off valves so that one motor acts as a pump during unequal torque conditions between the two winches, while the valves are open.
