Abstract
1,255,459. Isomerizing alkylaromatics. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 26 May, 1970, No. 25091/70. Heading C5E. Alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons in which the alkyl groups are C 1-4 are isomerized at a temperature below 440‹ C. with a catalyst comprising an acidic refractory oxide and a hydrogenating/dehydrogenating metal component, and in the additional presence of both hydrogen and steam, the amount of steam being in the range 100-1500 p.p.m. (vol.) based on hydrogen plus hydrocarbons. Many suitable oxides and oxide mixtures are referred to, including zeolites; preferred are (a) silica/alumina containing 10- 70 wt. per cent alumina, and (b) alumina containing 1-3 wt. per cent fluorine. Preferred metal components are Ni, Co, Pd or Pt. Both alkyl benzenes and alkyl naphthalenes may be isomerized, but the process is particularly applied to C 8 aromatics, i.e. xylenes and ethyl benzene. In the latter case conditions may be such that some hydrogenation takes place so as to provide 1-50 wt. per cent C 8 naphthenes in the reaction product.
