Abstract

[Also in Division F1] The ignition circuit Q of an I.C. engine is controlled in dependence upon the angular position of a cam projection K<SP>1</SP> rotated with the crankshaft and affecting the impedance of a coil L included in an oscillator X such that oscillations are quenched when K<SP>1</SP> is adjacent coil L. The D.C. output at the oscillator terminal S is supplied to a pulse-shaping circuit Z which produces rectangular pulses at a rate proportional to the rate of rotation of K<SP>1</SP>. The train of pulses is passed to the ignition circuit Q and also to a frequency-responsive circuit Y which supplies a signal, proportional to the pusle repetition rate, to a transistor T<SP>1</SP>. Transistor T<SP>1</SP> controls the base bias of the oscillator transistor T such that the time delay between movement of the projection K<SP>1</SP> and a corresponding change in the state of the oscillator is variable with engine speed. Thus, for low-speeds, transistor T<SP>1</SP> conducts, R 2 shunts R 4 and the time delay is high and constant such that the ignition advance is effectively zero; for increasing intermediate speeds, T<SP>1</SP> does not conduct, the voltage at point B increases rapidly and the time delay decreases rapidly such that there is a rapid advance in the point of ignition; for high-speeds the voltage at point B is constant and the time delay is low and constant such that the setting of the advance is constant. In alternatives, the time delay may be controlled by varying the value of R 1 and/or C 1 , or by varying the distance between the coil and the projection e.g. by having an irregular shaped projection or by making all or part of the projection displace as a function of the centrifugal force.
