Abstract

1409748 Ignition systems FAIRCHILD CAMERA & INSTRUMENT CORP 12 Dec 1972 [6 April 1972] 57293/72 Heading FIB While the engine is operating at a low speed an initial bias reference circuit 13 controls the turn-on and turn off of the Darlington output circuit 19. The circuit 19 is turned on when the waveform from the pick-up coil 10 rises above the threshold voltage produced by the circuit 13 and is turned off when this waveform falls beneath this voltage. Turning on of the circuit 19 causes a current to flow through the primary coil 31 of the ignition coil 30. Turning off the Darlington output circuit 19 induces a voltage pulse in the secondary winding 32 of coil 30 which fires the appropriate sparking plug. When the engine speed reaches a given value a signal from the dwell feedback control 12a turns on the Darlington output circuit 19 when this signal rises above a reference level. This reference level increases as the engine speed increases turning on the Darlington output circuit 19 at an earlier time. A current limiter 16 in a LIC (linear integrated circuit) chip 20 changes the reference voltage produced by a tachometer 12b to a new value such that the current through primary 31 remains at its maximum value for at most a selected short period of time. A transient protection device operates to turn off the Darlington output circuit 19 if the transient voltage rises above 28 volts. This is done by turning on the output driver circuit 15. To limit the current in the case of an over-voltage condition in the LIC chip 20 current limiting resistors are placed in every current path. The current in the primary winding of the ignition coil remains on while the amplitude of the output signal from the coil 10 increases to a maximum positive value and then drops very sharply towards a peak negative value. The level of the signal from the coil 10 at which the current through the circuit 19 cuts off is beneath a reference voltage by an amount controlled by certain circuit parameters. The system can be produced using only two semi- conductor chips. One chip is the basic LIC chip 20. The other chip contains the Darlington output circuit. Details of the circuitry of these chips are given in the Specification.
