Abstract

1,255,214. Apparatus providing dry access to ships below the waterline. L. S. G. HOMEWOOD. 3 June, 1970 [4 March, 1969], No. 11326/69. Headings B7M and B7S. Apparatus for providing dry access to a ship's hull below the waterline 23 while afloat comprises an impervious wall forming a chamber having a top 15, back 12 and two sides 13, 14, the front of the chamber being formed by the portion of the hull 16 to which access is desired. The wall has a seal 22 around the edges in contact with the hull and wires 37, 38, 43 hold the seal against the hull. Compressed air enters the chamber through line 25 and valve 26 to displace water from the chamber and water 35 in tank 36 on top of the chamber opposes the upward buoyancy forces on the chamber. In the embodiment shown access to the chamber is through air-lock 17 and hatch 18. Work is done from raft 30 and the water level 24 can be adjusted by exhaust valves 31 to 34.
