Abstract

1,255,152. Preparation of water insoluble dyestuffs. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 June, 1969 [2 Aug., 1968], No. 37041/68. Heading C4P. Water-insoluble anthraquinone dyestuffs, and mixtures thereof, are prepared by treating at least one water-insoluble anthraquinone dyestuff which contains one or two hydroxymethyl groups each of which is ortho to an hydroxy or amino group in the anthraquinone nucleus with an alkali and a reducing agent at above pH 9 to convert the hydroxymethyl group, at least in part, to a methyl group the remainder being converted to a hydrogen atom. Aqueous or aqueous-organic reaction mediums may be used at temperatures between 20‹ C. and the boiling point of the medium. 2 to 10 mol. of alkali per mole of dyestuff is preferred. Preferred starting materials have the general formulµ wherein Y is optionally etherified OH and ring X may be substituted by Cl or C 1 -C 4 alkyl or alkoxy and Z is H or a substituent group. The dyestuffs give red and blue shades on cellulose di or tri acetates, polyamides and aromatic polyesters. The starting material 1,5-dihydroxy-4,8- diamino - 2 - (methyl - hydroxyphenyl) - 6- hydroxymethylanthraquinone is prepared by reacting 1,5-dihydroxy-4,8-diaminoanthraquinone 2,6-disulphuric acid with a mixture of o, m and p-cresols with boric acid in sulphuric acid and then reacting the product with formaldehyde as in Specification 1,152,244.
