Abstract
1,255,077. Reflux crystallization. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 18 June, 1969 [19 June, 1968; 8 May, 1969; 9 May, 1969], No. 30870/69. Heading BIG. A reflux crystallization column having a heater at one end and a cooler at the othercomprises one or more duct-containing transverse partitions, forming a plurality of connected chambers, and a rotary agitator within each chamber. Each duct allows opposed flow of solid and liquid therethrough. The column may be vertical, horizontal or inclined. Each partition may be flat (Figs. 1, 2 and 6) or frustoconical (Fig. 5). Each duct may be axial (Figs. 5 and 6) or to one side (Figs. 1 and 2). The agitators may have a common axial shaft (Figs. 1 and 5) or individual transverse shafts (Figs. 2 and 6). Each agitator may be associated with baffles (Figs. 3a and 3b) or be perforated and occupy the major part of the chamber (Fig. 3c). Opposed flow may be assisted by screw conveyors (Figs. 2, 4b and 4d), porous ducts (Figs. 3c, 4b, 4c, and 4d), porous discs (Figs. 4a, 4c and 6), and valves (Fig. 4a). Fig. 1 (shown) illustrates a simple embodiment without assisted flow.
