Abstract

1,255,044. Artificial elbow joints. J. R. BUNTING and C P. STEEPER. 15 April, 1970 [16 April, 1969], No. 19322/69. Heading A5R. An elbow joint for an artificial arm comprises a cam (15), Fig. 1 (not shown), pivoted in an upper surface of a circular base plate 1, a lever 16 extending from the cam into a slot in the periphery of plate 1, a locking ring 23 for rotation relative to the plate 1 for moving lever 16 into one of two positions, and a spring-loaded plunger 20 passing through the plate 1 and actuated by the cam to engage or disengage in one of a plurality of holes (21), Fig. 3 (not shown) in a plate 19 mounted below plate 1 for rotation relative thereto. Plate 19 is joined to a cylinder 6 connected to the forearm, and a member 5, connected to the upper arm, is secured to a spindle 3 which rotates in blocks (2), Fig. 1, mounted on the plate 1. The angle between the longitudinal axes of the upper arm and forearm may be locked at a selected value by engagement of a spring-urged pawl 7 with a toothed quadrant 4 secured on spindle 3, the pawl 7 being disengaged on downward pivoting of levers 8 about a pin 11 in blocks (2). A lug 12 on quadrant 4 may engage a spring- urged plunger 13 to reduce shock as the upper arm and forearm move into line. The lower arm may rotate about its longitudinal axis, which is perpendicular to plate 1, and is locked in a selected position by engagement of plunger 20 in a hole (21) in plate 19, a spring-urged ball 22 engaging in a diametrically opposite hole. On rotation of ring 23, by means of thumb tabs (24), Fig. 3, relative to plates 1 and 19, the lever 16 engaging in a slot (25), Fig. 3, in the ring 23 rotates the cam (15) which engages a pin 18 in plunger 20 to disengage the plunger from the plate 19.
