Abstract

1,254,912. Lawn mower. NORTON VILLIERS Ltd. 5 Nov., 1970 [9 Aug., 1969], No. 39949/69. Heading A1F. A power-driven mower has a hydraulic transmission with two pumps 15, 16 independently supplying motors 28, 38 which respectively drive independently the cutter 37 and a ground roller 3 which droves the mower. The chassis comprises side members 2 connected by member 9 comprising crankcase 10 of engine 5, crankcase extension 11, cowl 12 of engine cooling fan 13 and pump body 14. Body 14 incorporates the two pumps 15 and 16 of the internal ring gear type which have a common inlet 21, 49 fed by the return lines 48, 36 from the motors and make-up pipe 23 which receives oil from crankcase extension 11 or separate tank. Pumps 15, 16 have independent outlets 26, 45 to motors 28, 38. Roller motor 28 gives a velocity ratio of 10:1 and is of the radial plunger type while cutter motor 38 at 2.5:1 may be similar to pumps 15, 16. Spring loaded control valves 50, 51 are both closed when both motors are in operation; when a valve is opened pressure in the line from the pump to the motor drops and the motor stops. A conventional helical bladed cutter 37 is used. (Note that a straight bladed cutter is shown in the Figs. for simplicity).
