The smoke from an incinerater having an upwardly tapering shell covering a central pile of burning material is reduced by capturing the particle laden gases in the central zone of the upper outlet and returning these gases to the lower part of the incinerater, while allowing the gases to escape from the periphery of the upper outlet. An incinerater comprising a cone shaped shell 21 placed over a burning pile of rubbish has a collector hood 27 located in the central zone of the upper outlet, and ducts 31 leading the particle laden gases to tangential inlets 35 in the lower part of the shell. A spark guard 23 covers the outlet from the shell, comparatively clear gases escaping at its periphery. Air inlet doors at the bottom of the shell are operated in unison by a motor 207. Auxiliary burners 161 may be mounted in the outlets 35, and dampers 81a and fans 28 control the recirculation of the gases. The pile of waste material may be arranged over air supply ducts formed in a concrete base. The air may be distributed through pots 328 embedded in the base and arranged in threes connected to headers 340, Fig. 20, or through downwardly directed nozzles 277 in pipes 270, Fig. 16, arranged in threes. The dampers 81a in the recirculation ducts, the fuel supply to the auxiliary burners, auxiliary air inlets to the recirculation ducts and the air inlet doors in the incinerater shell are all controlled by thermostats at the top of the shell, which operate an alarm if the temperature continues to rise after the fuel to the burners has been cut off, the air inlets closed and the recirculation stopped.
