Abstract
1,254,428. Feeding webs; cutting; detecting faulty sheets. ILFORD Ltd. 17 Feb., 1969 [21 Feb., 1968], No. 8467/68. Heading B8R. Faulty sheets are rejected at a cutting station in response to detection of faults in a web prior to cutting, detection of a fault causing a pattern change in the first stage of a pattern shift register which change subsequently shifts through the remaining stages of the register during feeding of the web until it reaches a predetermined stage where it causes rejection of the sheet containing that fault. Apparatus.-A web A is continuously drawn from a supply roll 13 by drive rollers C 1 , C 2 past a fault detection point D, e.g., including an infra-red scanner for the web coating. The web passes into a storage area and is then fed intermittently by drive rollers J 1 , J 2 to an end stop member L; a guillotine K severs the web into sheets of a predetermined length. When rollers J 1 , J 2 are rotating, they drive the web forward at a faster speed than the speed with which rollers C 1 , C 2 feed the web into the storage area. Thus, arm F carrying free-running roller E travels slowly from position 1 to position 2 when rollers J 1 , J 2 are inoperative, and travels quickly from position 2 to position 1 during feed of the web to member L for cutting. Every time the arm F passes through position 3 on its downward path, i.e. after a sheet has been cut from the web, a pulse is transmitted to pattern shift register M. This pulse causes patterns to be transmitted from any one stage of the register to the next, and thus a pattern change caused by fault detection and initially in the first stage of the register will be transmitted through the register until, at a predetermined stage, it causes rejection of a sheet at the delivery end of the apparatus. The predetermined number of stages corresponds to the integral number of sheet lengths between stop member L and detector point D when arm F is in position 3.
