Abstract

1,254,185. Hydrotreating and reforming naphtha. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 17 April, 1969, No. 19714/69. Heading C5E. A hydroforming process comprises the steps of (1) pretreating a hydrocarbon feed with a catalyst comprising a Group-II B -metal-containing crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having uniform pore openings of less than 6Š at elevated temperature and pressure and in the presence of hydrogen and (2) thereafter contacting at least a portion of the product from stage (1) with a hydroforming catalyst in the presence of hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure to obtain a product having an increased octane rating. A preferred pretreatment catalyst is a zeolite A base-exchanged with zinc and impregnated with palladium, which has been sulfactivated before use. The effluent from stage (1) may be fractionated and only the higher boiling part reformed; in this case the unreformed lower-boiling part may be blended with the reformate.
