Abstract

1,254,176. Mixing apparatus; polymerisation apparatus. GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. 22 Jan., 1969 [29 Jan., 1968), No. 3507/69. Headings B1C and B1X. [Also in Division C3] An autoclave reactor for polymerisation reactions comprises an elongated pressure vessel 10 for longitudinal flow of reaction material between feed 29 and discharge 30 openings in the ends of the vessel, a plurality of transverse, skirted baffles 13, 14, 15 partitioning the vessel into a longitudinal series of at least three incommunicating zones 19, 20, 21, 22, a series of inlet openings 24 communicating with respective zones, sets of rotary blading 25 positioned within respective zones and a rotary shaft 11 carrying said baffles and blading to rotate same, each set of blading comprises propelling means adapted to convey material through the zone from end to end while simultaneously agitating the material, and flat-bladed paddle-like rotary impeller to mix the material intensely. The blades may comprise spaced helically disposed blades for conveyance and agitation of the reaction mixture, and paddle blades to provide intense agitation. The baffles may comprise a circular plate 16 with depending skirt 17 forming with the vessel wall an annular passage for through-flow of material.
