Abstract
125,413. Soc. Anon. pour l'Exploitation des ProcÚdÚs Westinghouse- Leblanc. June 24, 1915, [Convention date]. Ordnance chambers; design.-Relates to mortars for firing the projectiles described in Specification 14477/15, [Class 9 (i), Ammunition &c.], which projectiles fit over a cylindrical support having a central cavity for receiving the propelling-charge. According to the invention, the range is varied by adjusting the free space between the end of the support, and the base of the projectile. Large adjustments of range may be made by varying the number of powder-charge elements. The mortar comprises a stem D adapted to fit into a tube B, Fig. 1, carried by the projectile A and provided with vanes C. The stem is detachably secured by a screw H at an angle of 45 degrees to a carriage G, N, Fig. 2, which can be trained by a worm gear P round a base R provided with spikes S. The projectile is discharged from the mortar by an electrically-ignited cartridge 1 held in the tube B by a wad 2 and fitting into a chamber F at the front end of the stem D. For fine adjustments of the range, the space between the end of the stem and the base of the shell is regulated by means of a screw K, J, Fig. 2, in conjunction with a sliding abutment L which limits the insertion of the tube B of the projectile over the stem D of the mortar. For large adjustments of range, additional cartridges 3, 4, without igniters, are put in the chamber F. A sheet metal cylinder T is provided around the stem D to deaden the shock of discharge and to act as a shield if the tube B bursts.
