Abstract

1,254,012. Cleaning spray burners. ASSOCIATED BRITISH COMBUSTION Ltd. 16 May, 1969 [17 May, 1968], No. 23642/68. Heading F4T. A method of cleaning a spray burner (not shown) comprises passing a purging medium through the burner in a first period, adding an oil solvent to the purging medium and passing the mixture in a second period, and completing the cleaning by passing purging medium only in a third period. The purging medium, e.g. steam, air, or carbon dioxide, passes through a chamber 9 where it is mixed with the solvent, e.g. naphtha, sprayed from a nozzle 10. When the burner is still in use compressed air is passed via a control valve 1, a first spool valve 2, and flow restrictors 4a, 4b, to the left hand side of a drive cylinder 5, the right hand side of which is connected to atmosphere via a second spool valve 3. A pumping cylinder 6 ganged to the cylinder 5 thus draws solvent from a header tank (not shown). When the burner is shut down the first purge period begins and the first spool valve 2 is switched to connect the compressed air source to the second spool valve 3 and to connect the left hand side of the drive cylinder 5 to atmosphere. The cylinder 5 thus bleeds to atmosphere to enable the second spool valve to switch and interconnect the right hand side of the drive cylinder 5 to the first spool valve 2. Thus the second purge period begins and the pumping cylinder 6 pumps solvent through the nozzle 10. The third purge period begins when all the solvent in the pumping cylinder 6 has been expelled, and is terminated by closing a purge valve (not shown) in the actuation line of the first spool valve 2.
