Abstract

1,253,988. Aircraft undercarriages. CLEVELAND PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. 4 Dec., 1968 [17 May, 1968], No. 57576/68. Heading B7G. [Also in Division F2] An aircraft weight check is made by using a pressure responsive device to measure the fluid pressure within a cylinder of an aircraft landing gear shock absorbing device. Errors due to vertical friction between the cylinder and its piston are removed by rotating the piston relative to the cylinder. An oscillatory rotation of the piston 11 relative to the cylinder 10 is produced by an hydraulic actuator 41 moving a lever 40 integral with a bolt 30, Fig. 2, so as to cause the bolt 30 to rotate within a locked threaded sleeve 34 in arm 25 and thereby laterally displacing a further arm 27 from arm 25. Arm 27 is connected to a bogie frame 12 and any movement will cause rotation of the piston 11. Thus a gradual settling of the weight reading on a pressure responsive instrument 46 will be observed as the vertical friction component is eliminated and the internal pressure in the cylinder balances the external load of the aircraft. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3, not shown, the lateral displacement between arms 25 and 27 is achieved by replacing the locked threaded sleeve 34 and bolt 30 arrangement with a piston and a hollow cylinder which is angularly inclined with respect to the arms 25 and 27.
