Abstract
1,252,962. Panel units for lining tunnels; supporting the walls of excavations, or reinforcing roads. J. P. BERNOLD, H. W. PFEIFFER and W. REISING. 8 Jan., 1969 [8 Jan., 1968 (2); 2 Sept., 1968 (2)], No. 1102/69. Headings E1F, E1G, E1H and E1K. A panel member 1 for use in lining tunnels, supporting the walls of excavations, or reinforcing roads, is corrugated and has the crest of at least one corrugation slit at intervals with alternate parts 2d of the crest depressed so that when the member overlaps another like member 2 rod 9 can be inserted between the raised and depressed parts of the crests to hold the two members together. The depressed parts of each member may be depressed as far as or further than V-shaped troughs 3 of the corrugations. The members may be curved along an axis parallel to or perpendicular to the corrugations when used in lining a tunnel. In one embodiment arches composed of hinged sections support the members as they are erected and as concrete which may be vibrated is inserted between the members and the walls of the tunnel. The end arch may have an opening at the top through which the concrete for the top of the tunnel may be inserted. The end of the space between the members and the tunnel walls adjacent the tunnel face is sealed off by a bent portion of one of the members or by a box-like extension on the end arch. If water is to be removed from the tunnel walls gravel, grit or pervious concrete is used instead of concrete and water outlets are placed at the foot of the tunnel. The surface of the members facing the inside of the tunnel may be sprayed with concrete or gunite. A tunnelling shield may be provided and be comprised of a plurality of longitudinally extending lances jointed together by slides extending from an edge of one lance into a slot of an adjacent lance. The lances are advanced by a hydraulic ram engaging in turn teeth on the underneath of each lance. In an alternative embodiment (Figure 27 not shown) a cement mortar containing waterglass is sprayed onto the walls of the members facing the inside of the tunnel and then concrete is pumped through sockets into the gap between the members and the tunnel walls. To support the walls of an excavation (Figures 24-26 not shown) beams are driven in along the perimeter. As excavation proceeds panel members are secured to the beams and are sprayed by concrete which passes through the slits in the members to fill the space between the members and the walls of the excavation. To form a road or runway panel members coated with asphalt or a plastics are laid in rows on the ground with connecting rods 9 coupling the members together. Bitumen macadam is then applied to the units. Alternatively grit and stones are placed on the members and bitumen is then sprayed. The surface is rolled, gritted and re-rolled.
