In treating a peanut crop there is applied to the foliage a sufficient amount, e.g. 20-75 pounds/acre of calcium compound having a particle size of less than 20 microns to substantially reduce the formation of " pops " and unsound kernels. The particle size if preferably less than 2 microns, e.g. submicron and the preferred calcium compounds are inorganic calcium compounds, e.g. CaO, CaCO 3 or CaSO 4 . If desired a pesticide, e.g. a fungicide, insecticide, a herbicide or mixtures thereof may be mixed with the calcium containing compound. Copper and sulphur are given as particular pesticides used. A glycol ether may be mixed with in calcium compound, for example in amount of 0À001 to 0À05 part by weight per part of composition. Lignin sulphonate may be mixed with the calcium compound in a weight ratio of calcium compound to lignin sulphonate of greater than 1:1. The peanut crop may be subject to several applications of calcium compound during the growing season. The calcium compound or mixtures containing it may be applied to the foliage as a dust or as a spray by being dispersed in water, particularly when the calcium compound has a particle size of 2 microns and is mixed with lignin sulphonate or a glycol ether which are particularly stressed compositions. The glycol ether used may be selected from ethylene glycol ethyl ether, diethylene glycol ethylether and diethylene glycol methyl ether.
