Abstract

1,252,494. Electro-photographic processes. RANK XEROX Ltd. Jan. 9, 1969 [Jan. 11, 1968], No. 1410/69. Heading G2H. An electro-photographic process comprises moving a photo -conductive surface bearing a latent electrostatic image in an endless path having a portion in an uphill direction, holding a quantity of particulate developer material in contact with the upwardly moving surface to cause the development material to flow in an uphill direction in contact with the moving surface through a zone of active development of sufficient length to effect image development, and introducing a continuous supply of developer material to the active zone to support the flow of material therethrough. The photo-conductive surface may be a drum 10, as shown, or alternatively an endless belt. A plate 21 is positioned adjacent the drum surface to form an active development zone 22 which communicates through openings 29, 30 with a supply trough 23 and a return trough 24. The housing 20 is extended on one side of the drum to provide an inclined return chute (40), Figs. 1 and 3 (not shown) augers 25, 26 extending through the troughs into the chute to deliver development material to trough 23 and empty material from trough 24 via the chute. Development material is circulated evenly through the supply trough due to tapering of the helical thread of auger 25. Return auger 26 rotates at a higher rate than delivery auger 25. A D. C. bias is applied to plate 21 so as to form a development electrode.
