[Also in Division C1] Ceramic nuclear fuel pellets are prepared by pelletizing and sintering at above 1400‹ C. in a reducing atmosphere a mixture of a nuclear fuel oxide powder and a small proportion of an oxide of barium or strontium or a compound thereof giving rise to an oxide by thermal decomposition. The amount of barium and/or strontium is preparably not more than 0À1% by weight. In Examples (1) and (3) a mixture of UO 2 , zinc stearate, and strontium stearate or barium carbonate is ground and compressed into tablets, which are ground, granulated, pelletized, and sintered in hydrogen; (2) ammonia is added to a solution of uranyl nitrate containing a small amount of barium nitrate and the precipitate is dried, calcined, and reduced in hydrogen; the product is pelletized and sintered in a mixture of argon and hydrogen.
