Abstract

[Also in Division C7] Metal surfaces having aqueous films or layers thereon are dried by immersion in a composition comprising an organic water-immiscible solvent, or mixture of such solvents, with a density less than 0À9 g./ml., from 0À1 to 10 wt. per cent of a monocarboxylic acid, or mixture of monocarboxylic acids, with 7 to 12 C atoms, and 0À1 to 8% of an alkylamine with 6 to 10 C atoms or a mixture thereof, the sum of C atoms in the carboxylic acid and alkylamine being 15 to 17. Water is displaced from the metal surface, and does not form an emulsion or multiphase system, and can thus be easily separated, the metal surface after evaporation of the solvent being dry, hydrophobic, and having enhanced corrosion resistance. Acids mentioned are benzoic, oenanthylic, pelargonic, caprylic, capric, and lauric, a technical mixture of the last three being preferred, and suitable amines are hexylamine, octylamine, and decylamine. The organic solvent may be a hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon fraction having a boiling point or range within the range 150-250‹C., and may have a chlorinated hydrocarbon, such as perchlorethylene added thereto.
