Abstract
1,251,678. Determination of reaction rate. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 3 Dec., 1968 [4 Dec., 1967], No. 57290/68. Heading B1X. The rate of a chemical reaction in which gas is evolved or consumed is determined by passing gas from source 50 at a predetermined rate through a reaction assembly which includes means 10 containing sample 20, interrupting the flow of gas into the assembly by operation of valve 60 so isolating the assembly, circulating the gas within the assembly by means of pump 75, measuring the pressure change by means 90 throughout at least one present interval of time, and operating valve 60 to restore the flow of gas through the assembly. The temperature of the sample may be controlled by heating bath 35. Calibration means 120 changes the internal volume of the system by known amounts giving corresponding changes in pressure. The pressure changes may be measured at different temperatures, the temperatures being measured by thermocouple 30 in well 28 of means 10; at varying magnetic flux, measured by means 175; and at varying amounts of u-v radiation emitted by source 200. All experimental conditions may be controlled by timing means 70. Measurements may be fed to intelligence processing means 140, which may record a sequence of spaced traces varying with time, each trace corresponding to measurement of one of the other parameters. There is reference to the rate of decomposition of 2-oxazolidinone both alone and in the presence of its 3-sodium derivative.
