Abstract

1,180,673. Determing gas content. BALZERS PATENT-UND BETEILIGUNGS A.G. 28 March, 1968 [7 April, 1967], No. 14930/68. Heading B1X. Samples are analysed by heating under reduced pressure and determining the amount of gas evolved from or absorbed by the sample as a function of the temperature of the sample, by a method wherein the temperature of the sample is controlled to maintain the rate of evolution or absorption of gas substantially constant. In the apparatus shown, sample 12 is heated in tube 11 which is continuously evacuated by pump 16, the output of heating element 13 being controlled by device 14 in response to variations in pressure sensed by pressure sensor 15. The sample temperature is recorded at 18 as a function of time or, by calibration, as a function of the amount of gas evolved or absorbed at constant pressure. In the apparatus of Figure 4 (not shown), an electromagnetically operated valve (27) immediately upstream of the pump operates to allow gas to pass to the pump when the pressure reaches a value p 1 , and until the pressure falls to a value p 2 . The amount of gas evolved is then proportional to (P 1 -P 2 ), and at each operation of the valve an impulse is passed to the recorder to advance the chart.
