Abstract
1,251,480. Automatic circuit breakers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 12 Aug., 1970 [17 Sept., 1969], No. 38785/70. Heading H1N. An automatic circuit breaker has a separate movable contact arm 29 for each of its poles, which arms are mounted on a common rotatable tie bar 33 having a metal core 101 with an insulating covering 103 and trunnions 105 extending from the metal core to engage respective insulating bearings in the insulating housing 7 of the circuit breaker. Flat, metal locking plates 125 are secured to the base 11 of the housing to lock the bearings and hence the tie bar, against upward movement. The insulating, base 11 and cover 13, have respective insulating barriers 17 and 15 which define the three pole unit compartments. A releasable trip member 57 is normally held in latched position by latch mechanism 61 unless tripped by a thermal and magnetic device 85, via trip bar 83 common to all the poles, on the occurrence of an overload. Manual operation of the circuit breaker is by means of handle 77 which when moved anticlockwise collapses the toggle linkage 63, 65, to open the contacts 23, 19, under the action of springs 73.
