Abstract
1,251,327. Wooden jigsaw puzzles. JOHN WADDINGTON Ltd. 31 Oct., 1968 [10 Nov., 1967], No. 51362/67. Heading A6H. A wooden jigsaw puzzle is cut out from a wooden blank by a stamping process comprising one or more stamping operations by means of one or more cutting dies each formed from strips of rule secured to a mounting member, the arrangement of the cutting die or dies being such that (a) the width of each protruding and/or necked region of each puzzle piece is made large enough to substantially prevent splitting or like breakage of the wood thereof during the stamping process and (b) each angle between cuts which meet one another, each angle between a cut and an edge of the puzzle and each angle included between two adjacent and relatively oblique portions of a single cut is made large enough to substantially prevent splitting or like breakage of the wood of the corners of the puzzle pieces defined by such cuts during the stamping process so that splitting or like breakage of the wooden blank during the stamping process is substantially wholly avoided. The width of the protruding and/or necked regions of the puzzle pieces is preferably not less than twice the thickness of the wooden blank and the width of the puzzle pieces is preferably at least 8 times the thickness of the wooden blank. All of the angles are preferably right angles and the locking promontories and bays of the puzzle pieces are preferably positioned centrally of the puzzle piece edges in which they are defined. The wooden blank may be #" 3-ply Chinese bass. Centre bevel rule of 2-point thickness and made of high grade steel may be used for the die, the rules preferably being securely mounted in a base member, e.g. a sheet of plywood, and embedded in a layer of compressible material, e.g. natural or synthetic rubber, secured to the face of the base member. The bed plate may be tin plate supported on a sheet of vulcanised fibre.
