1,251,077. Feeding tobacco. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. and D. W. MOLINS. 29 Sept., 1969 [30 Sept., 1968], No. 46233/68. Heading A2C. In a cigarette making machine in which natural tobacco shreds are fed through a shower channel on to a moving band, reconstituted tobacco shreds are added by extrusion into the channel. The showering may be effected by gravity or, as shown, by an air stream which carries the shreds upwardly through the shower channel on to an airpervious band 8 which is surmounted by a suction chamber 10 and conveys the tobacco stream past a trimmer 14 to a paper wrapper web 16. The shower channel, which has a relatively narrow dimension at right-angles to that bounded by the walls 20, 22 contains an extruder 18 for the reconstituted tobacco situated downstream of the region at which the natural tobacco shreds are introduced by a rotary suction drum (not shown). The extruder occupies less than the full width of the channel between the walls 20, 22 whereby that part of the stream containing reconstituted tobacco is sandwiched on the band 8 between layers of natural tobacco, the final layer being, preferably, thick enough to ensure that the trimmer does not remove any reconstituted tobacco. The continuous extrudate, discharged transversely to the air stream, is broken off by the latter into shreds of suitable length.
