The invention comprises basic monoazo dyes, free from SO 3 H and COOH groups, of formula in which R 1 and R 2 each represents an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, R 3 represents a benzyl group or an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms which may be substituted by a halogen atom or a cyano, hydroxy or aminocarbonyl group, Y represents an alkoxy group, Z represents a hydrogen or halogen atom, an alkyl, alkoxy, trifluormethyl, nitro, alkylsulphone, arylsulphone, aryl, aryloxy group or an aliphatic acyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms, a benzoyl, a benzoylamino or an aliphatic acylamino group containing 1-4 carbon atoms, a cyano or carboxylic acid ester group or a carboxylic acid amide or sulphonic acid amide group which may be substituted, R 4 , R 5 and R 6 each represents an amino group which can be substituted by an aryl group or once or twice by an alkyl group or hydroxyalkyl group, or each represents a hydroxy, cyanamino or alkylmercapto group, at least one of the substituents R 4 , R 5 and R 6 representing a primary, secondary or tertiary amino group, and X<SP>#</SP> represents an anion. The dyes are prepared by coupling a diazotized aniline which is appropriately substituted with a tri-substituted pyrimidine. The dyes are preferably used to colour polyacrylonitrile fibres in yellow shades. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,203,714.
