Abstract

The invention comprises monoazo dyes of formula <FORM:1041538/C4-C5/1> wherein R1 and R2 which must be different, represent a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl group, R3 is a hydrogen or halogen atom, a is 1-5, X is a C1-C20 alkyl, cycloalkyl, C1-C6 acyl; a C1-C4 alkoxy, carboalkoxy, alkylsulphonyl, hydroxyalkylsulphonyl group; N-alkyl- or N,N - dialkyl - sulphonamido or dialkylamino group wherein alkyl is C1-C5; a benzoyl, trifluoromethyl, cyano, benzoylamino, phenylamino, b -cyanoethoxy, b -hydroxyethoxy, di-(b - hydroxyethyl)amino, di - (b - cyanoethyl)-amino, 2,3-benz, carbonamido or phenyl group or halogen atom or, if R2 is hydroxyl, X may be a nitro group. The dyes are prepared by coupling a suitable diazonium compound with a b - or g -resorcylic acid derivative. The dyes may be used to colour natural or synthetic fibres, particularly synthetic fibres, such as polyolefins, containing metal compounds in yellow and red shades.
