Abstract
1,250,822. Polyamides. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 23 Jan., 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 3777/69. Heading C3R. A copolyamide contains in copolycondensed form at least 25 wt. per cent of a defined polyamide-forming material and 25 to 75 wt. per cent of MSO 3 -(CH 2 ) m -NH-A-X and contains at least 750 m mols of SO 3 Mper kg. polyamide. A is -(CH 2 ) n - or p-phenylene; X is -COOR, -NH(CH 2 ) m -SO 3 M or -NH 2 ; R is H or C 1-4 alkyl; M is H, alkali metal or a ¢ equivalent of alkaline earth metal; m and n are integers from 4 to 6 and 5 to 12 respectively. The defined polyamide-forming materials are aminocarboxylic acids or their lactams and dicarboxylic acids and diamines all being free of other acid groups, e.g. amino-caproic or -andecanoic acid; capro- or lauric lactam; or salts of hexa-, octa- or deca-methylene diamine or 2,2,5-trimethyl hexamethylene diamine with adipic, sebacic or suberic acid. Several MSO 3 - containing compounds are specified; in Examples 1 to 3 50.4 parts (wt.) N-(6-aminohexyl)- 4-aminobutane sulphonic acid is condensed with 29.2 parts adipic acid and 120 parts caprolactam in aqueous sodium, lithium and potassium hydroxides respectively and in Example 4, 35 parts Na salt of N-(p-carbethoxyphenyl)4- aminobutane sulphonic acid is condensed with 60 parts caprolactam and 10 parts aminocarpoic acid. The polymers are transparent and hydrophilic and suitable for use as ion exchangers, adhesives and impregnants.
