Abstract

1442651 Sulphonated polyamides BAYER AG 28 Sept 1973 [28 Sept 1972] 45439/73 Heading C3R A sulphonate group-containing polyamide comprises recurrent units wherein A is H or -RSO 3 M (at least one A being the latter); R is alkylene or alkylarylene; M is alkali metal; R<SP>1</SP> is alkylene, cycloalkylene or arylene; B is alkylene or -R<SP>2</SP>-CONH-R<SP>1</SP>; R<SP>2</SP> is alkylene; and x is 0 or an integer, and has a relative viscosity of 1À1 to 3À5 (1 g./dl. in H 2 SO 4 at 25‹ C.), a M.P. of 150‹ to 300‹ C., and a sulphonate concentration of 800 to 3500 milliequivalents/kg. Such polyamides may be prepared by condensing 15 to 50 mol. per cent of each of the sulphonated diamine and phthalic acid with 0 to 70% of a sulphonate free aminoacid, lactam or salt; they may be blended in small quantities with a non-sulphonated polyamide prior to spinning to obtain fibres of improved basic dyeability. Numerous suitable reactants are specified. In specific examples polyamides are prepared from the sodium salts of 5-sulphoiaophthalic acid and of N-(deltasulphonatobutyl) hexamethylene or ethylene diamine or N-(4-sulphonatobenzyl)hexamethylene diamine and (when a further monomer is present) 66 salt or amino-caproic and/or -undecanoic acid. Some are directly spun into threads, others are blended (e.g. in amounts of 1 wt, per cent) in nylon 6 prior to spinning. Reference is made to Specification 1,258756.
