Abstract
1,198,082. p-Benzamide polymers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 13 June, 1967 [13 June, 1966], No. 20698/69. Divided out of 1,198,091. Heading C3R. Processes for the preparation of homo- or copolyamides containing at least 80 mol. per cent p-benzamide units by the anhydrous polymerization at below 60‹ C. of a p-aminobenzoyl halide salt X 1 - H 3 N<SP>+</SP>-C 6 H 4 -CO.X 2 , where X 1 is an aryl or alkyl sulphonate, acid sulphate or Ha radical and X 2 is Ha, are effected in a solvent for the monomer(s). The process of Specification 1,008,854 is acknowledged. The remaining 20 mol. per cent of units in the copolymers may be provided by a similar salt of an aromatic aminocarboxylic acid or monomers providing equimolar amounts of diamine or tetramine and dicarboxylic or disulphonic acid residues. Numerous monomers and combinations of comonomers are specified. Specified solvents in which the reaction may be effected are tetramethyl urea; hexamethyl phosphoramide; N,N-dimethyl acetamide; N-methyl, -ethyl or - acetyl pyrrolidone; N-methylpiperidone; N,N- dimethyl ethylene urea; N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP> - tetramethylmalonamide; N-methyl caprolactam; N,N-diethyl acetamide; and N,N<SP>1</SP>-dimethyl propion-, butyr- and isobutyr-amides. The use of such solvents as dispersion media for the reaction is stated to lead to products having advantageous properties for fibre formation, products having such properties being claimed per se in Specifications 1,198,081 and 1,198,093. Chain stoppers and lithium chloride, acetate, hydroxide, carbonate or oxide may be present in the reaction system. Specification 901,159 is also referred to.
