Abstract
1,250,479. Sound absorbing material. DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd. and T. H. MELLING. 27 Feb., 1969 [29 Feb., 1968], No. 9910/68. Heading B2E. A sound absorbing material is made by spraying a solution or suspension of an elastomer in a volatile organic liquid onto a flexible polyurethane foam to form a discontinous coating on the surface and causing or allowing the coated surface to dry so as to form a micro porous film in the form of web strands. The polyurethane substrate may be made from a reaction mixture comprising two trials having average MWs of 3000 and 1000 and only 75-90% of the stoichiometric amount of toluene diisocyanate in order to obtain a soft foam with a high hysteresis loss. Fire retardants may be incorporated in the substrate. The microporous elastomeric film may be of polyurethane or natural or synthetic rubbers and may contain fillers and pigments as well as vinyl polymers and copolymers, e.g. PVC to modify the softness of the film. The film may have a porosity of at least 50%, be less than 0.00 inch thick and have a pore size of less than 0.001 inch and an acoustical resistance of 4-4000 Rays c.g.s. units.
