Abstract

1,250,200. Non woven fabrics. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 21 Oct., 1968 [19 Oct., 1967], No. 49741/68. Heading D1R. [Also in Division C3] Fibrous materials are reinforced by applying thereto an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer binder prepared from a monomer mixture comprising 45-55% by weight of an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, 24-30% by weight of acrylonitrile, 12.5-30.5% by weight of styrene and 0.5-2.5% by weight of acrylamide. The copolymer binders are suitably prepared by emulsion polymerisation using anionic and/or nonionic emulsifiers. The (meth) acrylic esters are preferably esters of C 1 -C 8 monohydric, aliphatic alcohols, e.g. butyl acrylate. The copolymer binders are generally applied in conjunction with an aminoplast, epoxide or polyester resin or an aziridinyl compound and, optionally, an acidic curing catalyst. The copolymer dispersions may also include softeners, emulsifiers, wetting agents, foaming agents, stabilisers, fillers, thickening agents, optical brighteners and/or dyestuffs. The binder dispersions are applied by conventional methods, e.g. spraying, brushing, padding or immersing. After application, the treated material is dried and heated to harden the binder. The binders can be applied to fleeces, felts and other such materials composed of natural fibres such as cotton, staple fibre, jute, hemp, palm fibres, sisal, wool or silk; synthetic fibres such as polyamide, polyvinyl chloride, polyester or polyacrylonitrile fibres; and mineral fibres such as glass fibres, slag wool or asbestos fibres.
