A machine for cutting strips of food such as potatoes, comprises a rotating circular-saw type disc blade 4, a guide plate 5, and a plurality of horizontal blades 8 which are equally spaced vertically and extend transversely to the plane of the guide plate 5 and are mounted on a holder 9 on the side of the guide plate remote from the material to be cut, and mounted so as to be rectractable toward that side by disengaging an eccentric clamp 10. The blades 8 have cutting edges which are disposed on a circle which is coaxial with the disc blade. A block 11 used to apply feeding pressure to the material to be cut is illustrated in Fig. 4 (not shown) and has a slot (13) parallel to a face 12 which is held against guide plate 5, said slot being adapted to receive the disc blade. The block is provided with slots in a side wall (15) to receive the blades 8 and in a modification can be used in the cutting of successive slices when the blades 8 are retracted.
