1,249,976. Knitting-machines. WILLIAM COTTON Ltd. 15 Nov., 1968 [25 Nov., 1967], No. 53727/67. Heading D1C. A straight bar machine has provision for changing from rib to non-rib knitting with loop doubling, including loop spreaders 7 fixed to the machine needles 2, spaced ones 7a of which are attached to the opposite sides than the remainder. When the change occurs previously inactive frame needles 1B engage spreaders 7 and receive the loops. Spreaders 7a transfer their loops to spaced needles 1A1 already bearing loops. The loops are then engaged by transfer points which are moved to close the gaps between adjacent groups. In one example spaced blocks of points are closed together while in another a successively smaller number of loop groups are successively moved one needle space towards the centre of the bed.
