Abstract

1,249,919. Mixing machines. VEMAG VERDENER MASCHINEN-UND APPARATEBAU G.m.b.H. Feb.24, 1969 [March 1, 1968], No.9866/69. Heading A4C. A mixing machine comprises at least one perforated disc 2 and a multi-armed knife-head 8 mounted for rotation adjacent the disc, the knifehead comprising a precutter member 10, substantially axially fixed relative to the disc and having arm elements 15 forming leading parts, relative to the rotational direction, of the knifehead arms and having leading faces (29), Fig. 3 (not shown), at an acute angle to the adjacent disc surface, a blade holder 11, axially displaceable relative to the member 10 and the disc and having arm elements 16 forming trailing parts of the knife-head arms, knife blades 9 carried by the blade holder arms elements 15 between the latter and the member 10, and means for resiliently biasing the blade-holder so that the blades 9 are pressed against the adjacent disc surface. The machine may have three discs 2 and knife-heads 8 mounted in a cylindrical housing 1. Each knifehead may have two, three, or more arms. The holes in the discs increase in number and decrease in size in the downstream direction. The discs 2 are spaced by stationary cutting rings 4 having cylindrical sleeves with projecting teeth 5. A shaft 7 having a generally triangular cross-section, carries members 10, shoulder parts 14 of hubs 12 of which fit over the shaft 7. Members 10 may alternatively be secured to shaft 7 by co-operation between springs and grooves (19) Fig. 2 (not shown) in shoulders 14. The hubs 12 are clamped together between a shoulder 21 on a pump wheel 22 and a nut 23. Hubs 13 of blade-holders 11 are mounted within hubs 12 of the associated members 10, shoulders 20 of hubs 13 having a clearance bore for shaft 7. Arms 16 of members 11 are mounted on projections (18) Fig. 3 (not shown) from hubs 13, the projections (18) being a loose fit in grooves (17) in hubs 12. The axial depth of grooves (17) is such that relative axial displacement of members 10 and 11 is possible. Blades 9 having holes (25), Fig.3 (not shown) are mounted on pins (26) in arms 16. The blades may rock about the pins (26) and the blade-holders 11 may also rock slightly. Surfaces (30) of arms 15, Fig. 3 (not shown), following the surfaces (29) are substantially parallel to the disc surface. Dispersal of material penetrating between blades 9 and arms 15 is provided for by grooves (28), Fig.3 (not shown), in arms 15. The blade-holders 11 are biased towards the discs 2 by spiral springs 24 mounted on the shaft 7 within the hubs 13, or alternatively, by air, or other fluid, filled annular rings (33), Fig.4 (not shown) in the place of the springs. The rings are pressed against shoulders 20 by fluid, such as water, pressure communicated via an axial bore (37) and radial bores (38) in shaft 7. Controls may ensure that the blades 9 press against discs 2 only after initiation of the supply of material to be mixed. The spaces 31 between shoulders 20 and adjacent shoulders 14 may be aspirated via bores in the latter and a bore 32 in shoulder 21 of the pump wheel 22 which provides suction and also ejects mixed material from the machine.
