A transparent glass ceramic of composition (weight per cent): 50 - 65 SiO 2 21 - 28 Al 2 O 3 0 - 10 P 2 O 5 1À5 - 5 Li 2 O 0 - 2 MgO 0 - 8 ZnO 0À5 - 5 TiO 2 1 - 3 ZrO 2 0 - 1 Na 2 O 0À5 - 1 As 2 O 3 , wherein SiO 2 : (AlPO 4 + LiAlO 2 + MgAl 2 O 4 + ZnAl 2 O 4 ) = 1À2-2À1 : 1, (SiO 2 + AlPO 4 ) # 71, (MgO+ZnO) # 2, and (SiO 2 +AlPO 4 +LiAlO 2 + ZnAl 2 O 4 + MgAl 2 O 4 ) # 90, is treated with a Li 2 SO 4 /K 2 SO 4 salt melt for 1-10 hours at 650-800‹ C. so as to strengthen it. The Li content is preferably higher than, most preferably at least twice, the K-content of the melt. A number of composition examples and examples of treatment schedules are given. The glasses of the examples all had a yellowish tinge.
