Abstract

1,249,430. Controlling reactors. R. L. MOORE. 15 Sept., 1970, No. 43946/70. Heading G6C. In a cyclically pulsed nuclear reactor, mechanical power is produced directly by the generation of steam in the liquid fuel, the operation being simple harmonic. Cyclic operation is effected by formation of steam voids in the fuel which expand the fuel columns. After expansion, reactivity falls, the void volume decreases and the fuel volume contracts. A further reactivity control is introduced by control rods, the degree of insertion of which is determined by a centrifugal governor associated with the mechanical output shaft. The governor serves load charges, through the shaft angular velocity, but prevents the reactor pulsation drifting. The uranium sulphate fuel, dissolved in light water, is contained in the chamber 12<SP>1</SP> and the steam voids generated therein urge the piston 35 downwards, against the spring 48, to produce mechanical power at the shaft, 60. The piston is moved upwards by 48 as the voids collapse. The control rods 26, 27 are adjusted by the governor 63 coupled to the power take-off 60.
