The method of making coal briquettes using a sulphite lye binder according to parent Specification is modified by adding to the mixture, or to the coal or to the lye, a substance or substances which reduce the reactivity of the lye. Examples are phosphates, e.g. sodium and ammonium hydro- and polyphosphates, and chlorides, e.g. of calcium, sodium, zinc, potassium and barium, and silicates.
