Abstract

1247319 Super-conductors GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 17 April 1970 [29 April 1969] 18503/70 Addition to 1160566 Headings H1A A5 and A4D In a method of producing a super-conductor tape of the kind disclosed in the main Specification 1160566 in which a super-conductor lamina is bonded between two outer laminae of a metal having a higher coefficient of expansion at an elevated temperature so that on cooling the superconductor is subjected to a compressive stress, the super-conductor is produced by passing a strip of Nb through a bath of molten Sn, and heating the resulting strip to form Nb 3 Sn at the Sn-Nb interface, the heating step being terminated before all the Sn is reacted so that elemental Sn surfaces are preserved on the strip. This improves the solderability of the strip. Three such strips are assembled and soldered between two Cu foils as described in the main patent.
