A side discharge rail vehicle hopper comprises a wheeled chassis 10 having pivoted thereto at 24 the hopper bottom 16 and pivoted to the bottom at 38 a side structure 30, there being located on the bottom 16 angle members 42 and 44 which co-operate with members 18, 22 on the chassis to locate the components in the load-carrying condition of the hopper and also longitudinal pegs 48 located behind lugs 46 on chassis end plates 20, there being fixed to opposing sides of the structure 30 wheels 50, 56 which run on rails 60, 58, these rails being raised at a discharge station so that the hopper there assumes its discharge condition, Fig. 3. The bottom 16 is formed with side walls 62 thereby providing it with a shoot-like configuration. In a modification, Fig. 7, the hopper is discharged by lifting the side 49 of structure 30 using a rod 77. A roller 48 on the structure 30 guides and limits the structure by engaging a slot 70 in an extension 62À1 of bottom side walls 62. Tilting of the bottom is caused by a further roller 72 on structure 30 moving in a slot 74 located in an extension of end plate 20. In a further embodiment, Fig. 9, the structure 30 is raised by means of a ram 86 engaging an abutment 80À1, there being attached to the ram a cable 88 which passes over pulleys and is connected at its opposite end to a point 80 on structure 30. The arrangement is such that the point 80 is raised a little before abutment 80À1.
