Abstract

1,247,051. Flocked material. COURTAULDS Ltd. 26 Feb., 1969 [27 Feb., 1968], No. 9373/68. Heading B2E. Carbon or graphite filaments are cut into short staple lengths and deposited onto an adhesively coated substrate by an electrostatic flocking process to form an assembly of substantially parallel filaments normal to the substrate. The substrate, which may be a polymeric film or knitted or woven glass, nylon, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, viscose or cotton fibres, is coated with a polyurethane or polyacrylic ester and placed on the earthed surface of a high potential generator with the coated face towards the charged surface. The carbon filaments are attracted to the earth surface and become trapped in the adhesive. When a sufficient quantity has been deposited the assembly is removed and the adhesive allowed to dry. In an embodiment the substrate and/or the binder are made conductive and are earthed directly.
