Abstract

1,246,989. Polymerizing vinyl chloride. CHATILLON S.A. ITALIANA PER LE FIBRE TESSILI ARTIFICIALI S.p.A. 17 Dec., 1968 [19 Dec., 1967], No. 59983/68. Heading C3P. Vinyl chloride is (co-)polymerized in bulk (including the use of minor amounts of solvent or diluent) at below 0‹ C. in the presence of a hydroperoxide ROOH in which R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or arylalkyl and a salt of a monoester of sulphurous acid (R<SP>1</SP>OSOO) n M in which R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, having up to 12 carbons and M is a metal of Group I or II or aluminium of valency n. The ester-salt is preferably added in alcoholic solution. The polymerization may be stopped by adding a hydroxylamine salt. In the examples are prepared homopolymers and copolymers with methyl methacrylate or vinyl acetate, using a continuous process in some. Syndiotactic polymers are produced.
