Abstract

1,246,892. Stabilizing polyesters. NIPPON SODA CO. Ltd. 30 Oct., 1969 [2 Nov., 1968(2)], No. 53225/69. Heading C3R. Polyesters containing at least 80% by weight ethylene terephthalate units are stabilized by the addition during preparation or processing, of at least 0À0005% by wt. of a phosphite compound wherein X is hydrogen, phenyl, or an alkyl substituted phenyl group and at least 0À0005% of an organic tin compound wherein R 1 and R 2 are an alkyl group of 2-8 carbon atoms and R 3 and R 4 are an alkyl or alkenyl group with 1-17 carbon atoms or bis- (dibutyl stannic monolaurate) maleate, didibutyl stannic bis-(monoalkyl maleate), dibutyl stannic bis-(monoethyl maleate), dibutyl stannic maleate, or mixtures thereof. In the examples the compounds are added to polyethylene terephthalate or to a reaction mixture comprising bis-(#-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate with or without terephthalic acid either alone or in combination with isophthalic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, or adipic acid.
