Abstract

1405983 Flame resistant polyester compositions; polyphosphates MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 2 March 1973 [3 March 1972 9 March 1972 21 April 1972] 10179/73 Heading C3R [Also in Division C2] A polyester composition comprises a synthetic linear polyester and 0-2 to 3À5% by weight (in terms of P content) based on the polyester of a phosphorus compound of formula in which R is a divalent radical selected from para- and meta-phenylene or X is H, CH 3 , Br or Cl, m is 1 or 2 and n is 0 or 1-30. Examples describe the incorporation of flame retardant P compounds into polyethylene terephthalate and polytetramethylene terephthalate although poly-1 : 4-cyclohexane tere. phthalate and copolymers thereof with less than 20 mole per cent of dibasic acids such as isophthalic, adipic and azelaic are referred to. Preferably the flame retardant P compounds have a molecular weight of less than 6000. In Example 9, a polyphosphate of the formula is prepared by reacting phenyl phosphoryldichloride, hydroquinone and phenol.
