[Also in Divisions B2 and G1] A continuous process for producing a tobacco mash for the manufacture of reconstituted tobacco, in which finely divided tobacco and a liquid are fed into a stirred body of granular grinding material, the ground material being filtered out of the body as a homogeneous tobacco mash, is characterised in that the grains of grinding material are ground down to a size corresponding to the filter pass size and are removed from the body of grinding material together with the grain detritus and the tobacco mash, and in that the consequent loss of grinding material is compensated for by replenishing with grains of grinding material which are larger than the ones passing through the filter. Suitable apparatus is described, see Division B2. In one example, a suspension of ground tobacco in potassium carbonate solution is wet ground as above, and the resultant mash is mixed with glycerine, sodium carboxymethylcellulose and asbestos fibres, and is then cast into a sheet. In another example, a suspension of ground tobacco in an aqueous ammonia solution, to which is added glycerine, citric acid and sodium carboxymethylcellulose, is wet ground and the resultant mash is mixed with asbestos fibres before casting into a sheet.
